Ethiopian security forces in Amhara region have arrested more than 4000 people in recent crackdown against militia forces (Fano) accused for illegal activities. But security officials do not provide evidence to back up the accusations. Journalists and activists are among those arrested.

Desalegn Tassew, head of the Peace and Security bureau of the Amhara regional state said that  the crackdown would continue as the regional government would not relent in safeguarding the peace and stability of the region.  The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, have voiced concerns and raised the alarm about the arrests of prominent journalists and activists saying that the government should investigate and provide answers about the cases.

Fano militia and Amhara regional forces back federal army in the fight against TPLF when the war broke out in 2020. But the relation between federal government and that of Amhara region soared due to militias operating independently outside the command of federal or regional security forces.
