A referendum to create Ethiopia’s 12th regional state is being held, with millions of voters casting ballots in six zones and five special woredas of the South Nation Nationalities People Regional State.
Voting began this morning in the Konso, South Omo, Wolayita, Gamo, Gedeo, and Gofa zones. Additionally, the referendum is taking place in Burji, Basketo, Ale, Amaro, and Derashe special woredas.
The new region will be named Southern Ethiopia if the referendum received approval from the majority of voters.
